Bratwurst, Bürli & a Breeze That Wouldn’t Quit

August 1st marked Switzerland’s 734th birthday—and on Saturday, August 2nd, 48 members and guests gathered to celebrate with what the Swiss do best: Bratwurst, Bürli, and brilliant company.

We met at the Landings Marina BBQ pavilion, a lovely shaded spot that came with a “bonus feature”: a strong breeze that nearly sent our tablecloths flying to downtown. Plates and forks had to be held down.

President Vicki Burkhard gave a warm welcome to members, guests, and honorary members, and introduced the hardworking board who made the event possible. She gave a big shout-out to our legendary home bakers—whose Swiss-style cakes and pastries disappeared faster than you could say “Linzertorte”. Vicki also reminded everyone to check the club website for upcoming events and pointed out the Resources page, where you can find Swiss Favorites—the fine folks who supplied our tasty Bratwurst. (Yes, you can order more from them. We know you want to.)

Then it was time for a moment of Swiss pride. Urs B. played the official address by Federal President of the Swiss Confederation Karin Keller-Sutter in German (English version here) followed by the Swiss national anthem. Urs B. will post the English translation on our Club website.

Our grill masters, Urs B.,  Urs P. and Tom fired up the BBQ and, just 20 minutes later, served up the star of the show: St. Galler Olma Bratwurst with Bürli and mustard. The crowd was happy and full—well, until they saw the dessert buffet.

Bellies full and spirits high, members mingled, chatted, and eventually started to leave around 6.30 p.m. It was a breezy, Bratwurst-filled, belly-laugh kind of day, and we already can’t wait for our next event in October or one of our always-fun monthly Swiss Happy Hours.
